Description

A choice double-terminated Baryte floater from the Linwood Mine at Buffalo, Iowa, distinguished by exceptional gemminess, complete crystallization, and beautifully developed natural etching. The specimen presents as an elongated, fully crystallized Baryte form with no obvious point of attachment, making it a true floater with aesthetic interest from all sides. The crystal is a luminous pale golden to champagne-yellow, with excellent translucency to locally near-transparent gem zones. Bright, glassy luster flashes across the broader faces, while the naturally etched surfaces create a complex architecture of stepped growth features, dissolution textures, and intricate geometric markings. Particularly attractive are the small rectangular and blocky etched forms visible across the main faces, giving the piece a refined, almost architectural surface pattern. The specimen is complete and double terminated, with crystallization carrying through both ends rather than ending in a broken or contacted base. One termination forms a delicate, serrated crest of fine parallel Baryte growths, while the opposite end resolves into a more tapered, translucent termination. The sides show additional etched relief, minor ribbing, and bright reflective windows that emphasize the crystal’s internal clarity. At 7.1 cm, this is a strong miniature to small-cabinet example with excellent hand presence. Its combination of gemmy yellow color, full floater development, naturally etched surface character, and complete double termination makes it a particularly desirable Linwood Mine Baryte—both sculptural and highly collectible.
