Cassiterite with Muscovite – Mirror-Luster Crystals on Mica Matrix
Specifications
Description
Ex. Dr. Stephen Smale Collection A striking and highly refined specimen showcasing exceptionally lustrous cassiterite crystals of uncommon habit, elegantly set against a delicate matrix of silvery muscovite. The cassiterite crystals are the immediate focal point—displaying remarkably smooth, glassy faces with near-perfect mirror luster, a quality seldom achieved to this degree. The surfaces are so finely polished by nature that they reflect light with a metallic-like brilliance, enhancing the deep jet-black coloration and giving the crystals a sculptural, almost machined appearance. Crystallographically, the habit is both sharp and unusual, with clean, untwinned faces and crisp edges that further emphasize the specimen’s precision. The crystals are well-isolated and prominently positioned, rising from the matrix in a balanced and aesthetically pleasing arrangement. The surrounding muscovite matrix forms a soft, textural contrast, its pale, bladed rosettes and pearly sheen framing the cassiterite beautifully. This interplay between the dark, highly reflective cassiterite and the light, shimmering mica creates a compelling visual tension—both elegant and dramatic. One crystal does exhibit a minor tip abrasion, oriented outward and only noticeable upon very close inspection. Importantly, this does not detract from the overall visual impact or the specimen’s rarity and desirability. Material of this style from Xuebaoding is distinctly uncommon—particularly with such mirror-quality luster, sharp untwinned forms, and strong isolation on matrix. Its inclusion in the esteemed Dr. Stephen Smale collection, where it was held for decades since early production (1990s–early 2000s), underscores its significance and connoisseur-level appeal. An exceptional and highly aesthetic cassiterite, combining rarity of form, elite surface quality, and distinguished provenance. https://vimeo.com/1078058739
