Description

Ex. Daniel “Dan” R. Kennedy Collection Main Diopside Crystal: 8.3 × 6.4 × 3.0 cm A commanding Afghan diopside specimen centered by an exceptionally large, isolated prismatic crystal rising from a brilliant white calcite matrix. The composition is striking in its simplicity and strength: a single dominant green diopside crystal is prominently positioned on the matrix, giving the specimen a sculptural, almost architectural presence rarely achieved in this species at such size. The main diopside crystal is substantial, measuring 8.3 cm in height, with a robust prismatic habit and a deep olive to forest-green coloration. Its broad faces show strong vertical growth lines and subtle stepped surface textures, with areas of translucency visible along the edges and termination. The termination is complex and well developed, with multiple crystal faces creating a refined, angular cap. Smaller face development near the lower-left portion of the crystal suggests additional termination geometry, adding mineralogical interest and visual depth. The white calcite matrix provides an excellent contrast to the green diopside. Its soft, granular to crystalline surface is studded with smaller green diopside crystals and partial crystals, which appear across both the front and back of the specimen. These secondary crystals create a near 360-degree viewing experience while preserving the visual dominance of the large central crystal. The contrast between the dark green diopside and snowy calcite is particularly elegant and gives the piece a clean, classic display character. A notable added feature is the calcite’s vivid pink-red fluorescence under shortwave ultraviolet light, giving the specimen a second display mode beyond its already strong daylight aesthetics. The piece is presented on a flat-topped, labeled acrylic base, enhancing both stability and provenance presentation. This is a fine large-cabinet diopside from the Sar-e-Sang region, distinguished by the impressive size and isolation of its primary crystal, sharp prismatic form, richly colored green translucency, contrasting white fluorescent calcite matrix, and distinguished Dan Kennedy provenance. It is an unusually bold and memorable example of Afghan diopside, suitable for a serious cabinet or museum-caliber display.
