Gem Sphalerite on Matrix – Lustrous Honey-Brown Sphalerite Crystal Cluster
Specifications
Description
An elegant and highly aesthetic specimen showcasing gem-quality Sphalerite crystals scattered across a bright white crystalline matrix from the renowned Krushev Dol Mine in Madan, Bulgaria, a locality celebrated for producing some of the finest crystallized sulfide minerals in Europe. The specimen features a dense grouping of well-formed sphalerite crystals displaying sharp tetrahedral and complex crystal faces. These crystals exhibit a rich olive to honey brown coloration, with remarkable internal transparency visible in thinner edges and corners. Their surfaces possess an intense resinous to submetallic luster, producing brilliant reflections under light and giving the crystals a jewel-like appearance. The sphalerite crystals are attractively distributed across a snow-white matrix, likely composed of fine-grained quartz and calcite, creating a striking contrast that enhances the warm amber tones of the crystals. Numerous smaller sphalerite crystals fill the spaces between larger individuals, forming a glittering field of facets that adds texture and visual complexity to the piece. Some crystals display subtle color zoning from golden amber to smoky brown, while the larger crystals exhibit crisp edges and reflective faces typical of high-quality Madan sphalerite. The crystals appear naturally perched atop the matrix, producing a balanced and highly displayable composition. The Madan ore field in the Rhodope Mountains is internationally renowned for producing exceptional specimens of sphalerite, galena, quartz, and calcite. Specimens combining sharp sphalerite crystals with bright contrasting matrix, such as this example, are particularly sought after for their strong aesthetics and locality significance. With its large display size, excellent luster, and gem-quality crystals, this specimen represents a beautiful and classic example of Bulgarian sphalerite from one of Europe’s most famous mineral districts.x
