An extraordinary gem Sphalerite on bright white Calcite from a small 2020 discovery at the Huanggang Mine in China. Although Sphalerite is a widespread species, specimens combining crystals of this size, transparency, luster, twinning, and aesthetic contrast are decidedly uncommon. This is a competition-level example from what appears to have been a highly distinctive and limited occurrence. The centerpiece is a superb 2.8 cm Sphalerite contact twin, dramatically perched at the crest of the matrix. Its twinning produces a complex, architectural form, with the contact relationship marked by a modest but readily visible V-shaped notch. Broad, sharply developed faces possess exceptional adamantine luster, producing brilliant, almost mirror-like reflections. Most remarkable is the crystal's gemminess. In reflected light the thick twin can appear deep olive-brown to smoky cognac, yet backlighting reveals an extraordinary amount of internal transmission. The crystal illuminates in rich yellow-green, golden-olive and honey tones, with light penetrating surprisingly far through its substantial 2.8 cm body. This combination of strong color, physical thickness and genuine transparency is particularly desirable in Sphalerite and gives the crystal a dramatic transformation as lighting conditions change. Beside the twin sits a slightly intergrown 1.7 cm untwinned Sphalerite, itself highly lustrous and transparent to translucent. The smaller crystal complements rather than competes with the dominant twin, creating an unusually attractive two-crystal composition. The matrix provides superb contrast. It consists of large, bright white Calcite crystals in parallel growth, their surfaces lightly etched enough to produce intriguing triangular reflections under certain angles of incident light. Against this nearly snow-white foundation, the dark reflective faces and glowing yellow-green interiors of the Sphalerite become exceptionally prominent. Tiny 1–2 mm silvery-white lamellar aggregates, apparently Löllingite, occur to either side of the Sphalerite group and add another level of mineralogical interest without distracting from the composition. From a connoisseurial standpoint, the specimen succeeds across virtually every important criterion: gemminess, rich color, exceptional luster, crystal size, contact twinning, matrix contrast, composition, association, and rarity of occurrence. The ability of such a substantial Sphalerite twin to transmit so much light is especially memorable. A remarkable Huanggang specimen: a large, brilliantly lustrous 2.8 cm gem contact twin accompanied by a 1.7 cm gem Sphalerite, both glowing yellow-green to golden when illuminated, dramatically perched upon sculptural white Calcite with minute Löllingite accents. An exceptional and apparently highly unusual Chinese occurrence, and a superb representative of gem Sphalerite.
