Description

A superb and unusually sculptural green apophyllite specimen from the renowned basalt cavities of the Deccan Traps, Maharashtra State, India, distinguished by vivid color, excellent transparency, brilliant luster, and an exceptionally attractive flower-like crystal arrangement. The focal point is a remarkably three-dimensional radiating rosette of sharply terminated apophyllite crystals emerging prominently from a natural vug. Viewed from different angles, the aggregate opens outward much like a crystalline flower, with overlapping generations of crystals producing considerable depth and complexity. Individual crystals range from slender, spear-like forms to broader, strongly developed crystals, several of which rise prominently above the central cluster and give the specimen an impressive architectural profile. The color is particularly noteworthy. Rather than the very pale green often encountered in apophyllite from the Deccan basalts, these crystals display an attractive saturated mint to emerald-green coloration, with variations in intensity created by overlapping crystals and differences in thickness. Many crystals are transparent to highly translucent, allowing light to penetrate the aggregate and illuminate the cluster internally. This combination of color and clarity gives the specimen a distinctly gemmy character. Luster is another major strength. The crystal faces are exceptionally bright and vitreous, producing sharp flashes and mirror-like reflections as the viewing angle changes. Numerous crisp terminal faces remain visible throughout the cluster, and the photographs show excellent definition of the crystal forms. The specimen is reported to have no damage to any of the apophyllite crystals, an especially desirable attribute considering the density and delicacy of the radiating growth. The apophyllite contrasts beautifully against its host matrix. A dark, basaltic vug surface is extensively coated by white to cream-colored fine crystalline and microcrystalline material, creating a dramatic natural backdrop for the intense green crystals. Scattered pale, elongated crystals are also visible around the cavity. The contrast among the dark matrix, snowy-white secondary mineralization, and luminous green apophyllite gives the piece considerable visual impact. Particularly attractive is the way the apophyllite occupies the cavity rather than simply resting on a flat matrix surface. Crystals radiate outward and upward from multiple points, with additional darker green crystals visible beneath and around the principal rosette. This creates an unusually rich 360-degree, flower-like composition with worthwhile viewing angles from the front, sides, and above. A unique small-cabinet display specimen combining exceptional green color, gemmy transparency, brilliant luster, sharp crystallization, pristine condition, and strong matrix contrast. The dramatic floral architecture makes this an especially appealing example of the distinctive green apophyllites for which the Deccan Traps are internationally celebrated.
