Gypsum var. Selenite – Monumental Gemmy Sword Crystal Cluster with Elongated Transparent Blades
Specifications
Description
Ex. Daniel “Dan” R. Kennedy Collection A spectacular monumental selenite specimen from Wenshan, Yunnan, China, distinguished by its immense scale, dramatic architecture, and elongated gemmy crystal development. Measuring 50 cm across, this is a truly commanding large-cabinet to museum-scale specimen, with several exceptionally long, sword-like selenite crystals rising from a pale crystallized matrix in an elegant, open composition. The principal crystals are remarkable for their length and clarity, extending upward and outward like transparent blades. Several appear to exceed a foot in length, creating a powerful vertical rhythm and giving the specimen a striking sculptural presence. The crystals are slender, elongated, and beautifully formed, with clean terminations and well-defined prism faces. Their transparency to translucency is excellent for the size, with internal veils, growth channels, and subtle inclusions visible through the crystal bodies. The surfaces are finely detailed with strong parallel striations running lengthwise along the crystals, a classic feature that enhances both texture and light play. Under display lighting, the selenite shows a cool glassy to pearly luster, with bright linear reflections traveling along the long crystal faces. The overall effect is refined and architectural—delicate in material, yet grand in physical presence. The matrix consists of smaller intergrown gypsum crystals and pale, slightly granular white material, forming a natural base from which the large selenite “swords” emerge. Shorter secondary crystals cross the center of the specimen, adding dimensional complexity and reinforcing the dynamic, radiating composition. Despite the large size and exposed habit, the major crystals appear notably complete, with crisp terminations and excellent preservation. This is an imposing Wenshan selenite of exceptional display quality, notable for its massive dimensions, elongated gemmy crystals, strong termination quality, and elegant sword-like form. From the Daniel “Dan” R. Kennedy Collection, it carries both visual authority and distinguished provenance—an ideal centerpiece for a serious private collection, gallery setting, or natural history museum display. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pysvJ75wiHw
