Description

Ex. Wally Mann Collection; acquired from a Peruvian dealer circa 2012 A superb and highly aesthetic hübnerite with quartz specimen from the classic Pasto Bueno district of Peru, notable for its unusually balanced composition, strong luster, and distinguished provenance. The piece is built around a commanding cluster of robust, vertically striated hübnerite crystals, dramatically accented by a single prominent quartz crystal projecting across the front of the specimen. The hübnerite forms a dense, architectural group of bladed to prismatic crystals with a deep black to dark brown coloration and bright metallic-adamantine luster. The crystal faces are strongly striated lengthwise, giving the specimen a sharp, finely textured surface that catches light beautifully. Several crystal terminations are visible across the upper ridge, with the overall cluster presenting a complete, well-developed, 360-degree form rather than a flat or one-sided growth. The larger rear crystal adds mass and authority, while the smaller parallel blades create rhythm and sculptural complexity. The quartz is an especially important aesthetic element. Rather than overwhelming the hübnerite, it provides an elegant counterbalance: a translucent to milky-white, lustrous quartz crystal set diagonally across the dark hübnerite, pointing outward and giving the composition a dynamic sense of movement. Its tapered form, glassy surface, and soft internal veils contrast beautifully with the sharp, dark, ribbed hübnerite behind it. Small secondary quartz crystals at the base add sparkle and help visually integrate the association. This specimen has the desirable qualities sought in fine Pasto Bueno hübnerite: sharp crystal development, high luster, strong dimensionality, and an attractive balance between hübnerite and quartz. Many examples from the locality can appear chaotic or overly quartz-dominated, but this piece has a disciplined and elegant composition, with the quartz serving as a visual accent rather than a distraction. The result is a refined small-cabinet specimen with excellent display presence, classic Peruvian locality significance, and the added appeal of Wally Mann collection provenance. https://vimeo.com/567624626
