An exceptional miniature of water-clear Hyalite Opal from Kopasz Hill at Tarcal, distinguished by extraordinary transparency, brilliant glassy luster, remarkably sculptural three-dimensional growth, and a spectacular fluorescent response. The specimen is enveloped in an abundance of colorless, transparent Hyalite, developed as countless rounded globules, botryoidal lobes, curls, and bulbous glass-like projections over contrasting reddish-brown andesitic matrix. The material is strikingly clear—many of the individual forms appear almost like droplets of frozen water, with the underlying matrix plainly visible through substantial portions of the Opal. The luster is outstanding. Smooth, highly reflective surfaces catch the light from virtually every direction, creating brilliant highlights across the specimen. Combined with the exceptional clarity, this gives the Hyalite an almost liquid appearance: rather than looking like a conventional mineral coating, it resembles water arrested in motion over the matrix. What elevates this example considerably is its three-dimensional architecture. The Hyalite is not confined to a simple crust. It builds outward into projecting lobes, curling masses, rounded protrusions, and delicate glassy overhangs distributed throughout the piece. From the principal display angle, these formations climb upward into an irregular sculptural crest while extending laterally around the darker matrix, producing excellent depth and visual movement. The transparency also allows the contrasting matrix to participate in the composition. Warm reddish-brown and earthy tones appear beneath and between the colorless Hyalite masses, emphasizing their clarity and outlining individual globules. The result is an unusually intricate specimen that rewards examination from essentially every angle. Under ultraviolet illumination, the piece undergoes a remarkable transformation. The Hyalite produces an intense, vivid green fluorescence, illuminating virtually the entire Opal-covered architecture. The strength and extent of the response are superb: the complex silhouette remains clearly articulated while the transparent daylight material becomes an almost electric green mass under UV. Hyalite is a transparent, non-play-of-color variety of hydrated silica, and the Tarcal occurrences are particularly celebrated for producing exceptionally clear and lustrous examples. Even within such material, however, specimens combining pristine water clarity, extensive coverage, dramatic freestanding three-dimensional growth and strong aesthetics occupy a much higher tier. At only 4.8 cm, this specimen has tremendous presence for the miniature category. Its irregular vertical architecture, extraordinary abundance of transparent globules, excellent matrix contrast and virtually all-around development make it appear substantially more imposing than its dimensions suggest. A superb example from this classic Hungarian occurrence, and very plausibly among the finer aesthetic miniatures of its find: pristine, water-clear Hyalite with brilliant wet-look luster cascading in extraordinarily sculptural three-dimensional formations over contrasting andesite, capped by an exceptionally strong green fluorescent response under UV.
