Marcasite Crystal Stalactite – Rare Radiating Marcasite Formation with Golden Twin Termination
Specifications
Description
An exceptional and highly unusual Marcasite (Pyrite polymorph) crystal stalactite specimen from the Linwood Mine in Buffalo, Iowa, representing a rare and visually dramatic formation discovered during a limited pocket encounter in 2024. Specimens of this type from Linwood are extremely scarce, and this piece represents one of the finest examples from the find. The specimen displays a striking stalactitic structure, formed by dense aggregates of sharply terminated marcasite crystals radiating outward in all directions. The surface is covered in hundreds of small, brilliant metallic crystal points, creating a richly textured surface that sparkles intensely under light. One of the most distinctive features is a prominent larger twin termination near the upper portion of the specimen, exhibiting a rich golden-bronze metallic luster. This crystal stands out dramatically against the darker metallic field of smaller crystals and provides a strong focal point within the composition. The smaller crystals show the typical complex orthorhombic forms of marcasite, forming dense radial growth patterns that give the stalactite a sculptural and architectural appearance. Their surfaces display a classic steel-gray to brassy metallic sheen, with subtle iridescent tones appearing under certain lighting conditions. The elongated stalactitic structure tapers naturally toward the lower end, emphasizing the specimen’s growth habit and adding a dynamic sense of movement. The piece presents beautifully from multiple angles and maintains excellent overall crystal coverage across its surface. The Linwood Mine is well known among collectors for producing fine calcite, pyrite, and marcasite specimens, but stalactitic crystal formations such as this are extraordinarily rare. According to reports from the find, these pieces originated from a single pocket discovered in 2024, and no additional specimens of this type have been recovered since. With its rare formation habit, dense crystal coverage, and striking golden twin crystal, this specimen represents a museum-quality example of Linwood marcasite and would be a centerpiece in any advanced collection of sulfide minerals or unusual crystal growth forms.
