Wulfenite - Superb Orange Gem Large Crystal On Matrix

A superb and unusually architectural Wulfenite from the Erupción Mine at Los Lamentos, dominated by a large, intensely colored focal crystal rising prominently above an iron-rich gossan matrix. The specimen's greatest strength is its composition. A spectacular 3.1 cm principal Wulfenite occupies the visual center, elevated cleanly above the matrix and immediately commanding attention. Rather than appearing crowded by surrounding crystals, the main plate is given ample visual space, while numerous smaller Wulfenites distributed across the matrix provide repetition, balance, and depth. The result is an exceptionally satisfying small-cabinet specimen with a strong focal point and considerable three-dimensional character. The color is particularly rich: a deep, fiery orange, approaching burnt orange in the thicker portions while becoming brilliant golden-orange where light penetrates the crystal. Despite its substantial thickness—approximately 3 mm—the principal crystal retains noticeable translucency and areas of genuine transparency, allowing transmitted light to illuminate the interior and greatly intensify the color. This interplay between saturated orange body color and glowing transparent margins gives the crystal considerably more visual depth than an opaque plate. Its adamantine luster is outstanding. The broad principal faces are exceptionally bright and reflective, producing sharp flashes under incident light and emphasizing the richness of the orange coloration. The smoothest surfaces can appear almost glass-like, while subtle variations in the bevels and growth faces add complexity without diminishing the overall brilliance. The morphology of the main crystal is another distinguishing feature. Its upper outline gives an unusual nearly eight-sided tabular appearance, transitioning toward the more familiar four-sided Wulfenite geometry where the lower portion enters the matrix. One side exhibits conspicuous sloping beveled faces, creating an elegant stepped geometry, while the opposite broad face is smoother, exceptionally glossy, and strongly reflective. A smaller crystal is also developed in parallel directly upon the principal face, adding an attractive secondary growth feature without obscuring the larger crystal's form. Equally important, the main focal crystal appears remarkably complete and undamaged, an especially desirable attribute for such a large, prominently exposed Wulfenite plate. Across the surrounding dark brown gossan are numerous smaller square and rectangular tabular Wulfenites, many possessing excellent luster and attractive golden-orange transparency. These satellites create a sparkling field around the dominant crystal and establish a strong mineralogical context without competing with it. The contrast is excellent: luminous orange Wulfenite against rugged, earthy brown matrix. The specimen is also naturally well balanced for display. Its broad matrix provides a stable base while positioning the main crystal at an ideal viewing angle, giving the piece the appearance of a deliberately composed sculpture. An exceptional Los Lamentos Wulfenite distinguished by deep orange saturation, brilliant adamantine luster, notable transparency, unusual crystal morphology, and above all, superb structure. The combination of a large pristine focal crystal with a richly populated but restrained surrounding matrix gives this specimen the presence and visual hierarchy sought in fine display-quality Wulfenite.
