Description

This exceptional museum-grade specimen features a remarkably large, isolated Herkimer Diamond crystal dramatically perched on a double-sided dolostone matrix, an occurrence of notable rarity for the species. Weighing 316 grams and measuring 4.90 × 3.52 × 2.40 inches, the specimen commands attention both for scale and compositional elegance. At its heart is a dominant ~2.75-inch Herkimer Diamond, displaying superb clarity, razor-sharp double terminations, and a highly lustrous surface. Minor hydrocarbon inclusions are present, imparting subtle internal character without compromising transparency, while delicate internal rainbows enhance visual depth. Two smaller, well-formed Herkimer crystals accent the primary crystal near each termination, creating a balanced and highly aesthetic crystallographic composition. What elevates this specimen into the world-class category is the rare isolation of such a large Herkimer Diamond on matrix, compounded by the matrix itself being richly adorned. The dolostone host is encrusted with sparkling white dolomite crystals, providing striking contrast against the water-clear quartz, and is further embellished by smaller, black hydrocarbon-included Herkimer Diamonds. Crystal coverage on nearly all surfaces indicates a true floater specimen, an uncommon and highly desirable attribute for advanced collectors. Hand-mined in the spring of 2020 from the famed Ace of Diamonds Mine, this piece exemplifies the finest qualities sought in elite Herkimer Diamond specimens: size, isolation, pristine crystal form, and a rare, visually compelling matrix association. It would be equally at home in a top-tier private collection or a museum exhibition showcasing North America’s most iconic quartz localities.
