Irv Brown; John Stolz Collections An exceptional and highly aesthetic Scheelite on Muscovite from the celebrated Pingwu Beryl Mine, featuring the combination of extraordinary color, gemminess, sharp crystallization, and matrix balance that distinguishes the finest specimens from this classic Chinese locality. The composition is dominated by a superb 3.5 cm Scheelite crystal, perfectly elevated at the center of a sculptural bed of silvery-white to pale gray Muscovite. Its color is remarkable: a deep, fiery orange with rich amber and tangerine overtones, considerably more saturated than the color encountered on most Xuebaoding Scheelite. Despite that intensity, the crystal retains impressive transparency and gemminess. Light penetrates deeply into the crystal, producing glowing golden-orange zones and brilliant internal flashes that seem almost illuminated from within. The Scheelite also possesses excellent vitreous luster and unusually crisp form. Broad faces converge into a strong, sharply defined pyramidal geometry, while complex stepped and subordinate faces add architectural detail without compromising the crystal's commanding silhouette. Viewed under strong illumination, the combination of reflective faces and transparent interior creates a particularly dramatic interplay between fiery surface color and luminous internal brilliance. Equally important is the placement. The Scheelite rises naturally from a nest of large, pearly Muscovite books and hexagonal plates, whose cool silvery-white color provides an ideal visual counterpoint to the saturated orange centerpiece. The Muscovite radiates outward around the Scheelite rather than obscuring it, effectively framing the crystal while giving the miniature considerable breadth and three-dimensionality. The resulting color contrast is superb: fiery orange Scheelite against icy, pearlescent Muscovite. At only 5.5 cm overall, the specimen has the visual presence of a substantially larger piece, yet retains the concentrated composition and precision prized in elite miniatures. The quality is characteristic of the particularly important late-1990s production from Xuebaoding, when a limited number of Scheelites appeared with exceptional combinations of deep color and gem transparency. Although the locality has produced many Scheelite specimens, examples reaching this level of saturation while remaining genuinely gemmy are substantially more elusive. Under ultraviolet light, the Scheelite displays the locality's characteristic bright, ghostly-white fluorescence, adding another dimension to an already unusually complete specimen. Its distinguished provenance further enhances the piece: formerly in the Irv Brown and John Stolz collections, with Brown acquiring it for his miniature collection in the late 1990s. Its selection as a featured photographic example for the Pingwu Beryl Mine on Mindat further speaks to its recognizable quality and classic locality aesthetic. This is a remarkably complete Xuebaoding miniature: a single large, sharply formed, intensely orange and exceptionally gemmy Scheelite poised perfectly among contrasting pearly Muscovite, with superb luster, strong three-dimensional balance, excellent condition, fluorescence, and important collector provenance. Among the enormous number of Chinese Scheelites that have reached the market, this is the sort of specimen that immediately separates itself from the crowd—a genuinely iconic representation of the locality at miniature scale.
