Description

This extraordinary fluorite crystal group from the legendary La Viesca Mine in Asturias, Spain stands as a true museum specimen by every meaningful standard: size, color, crystal quality, and condition. Measuring an impressive 25 × 24 × 18 cm, the specimen is dominated by sharply defined cubic crystals, with the largest individual crystal reaching 3.5 cm—a remarkable scale for fluorite of this caliber. The crystals display an exceptional sky-blue to aquamarine coloration, luminous and evenly saturated, evoking the appearance of glacial ice. Transparency and luster are outstanding throughout, with gemmy interiors that transmit light beautifully and produce a crisp, glassy brilliance across the stepped cubic faces. Subtle internal violet phantoms can be observed within some crystals, adding depth and complexity without detracting from the overall purity of color. Aesthetically, the piece is exceptionally well composed: the fluorite crystals nearly blanket the matrix, with crystallization extending onto the reverse, creating a fully three-dimensional presence suitable for open display. Equally important for advanced collectors, the specimen is in superb original condition, with no damage, repairs, or restorations—a rarity for fluorite of this size and exposure. With the La Viesca Mine now closed, specimens of this magnitude and quality are no longer obtainable from the source. This example represents the pinnacle of Spanish fluorite and would be equally at home in a major institutional collection or as the unquestioned centerpiece of an elite private cabinet.
